Fashion Internships for Creative Students
The fashion industry seems to grow by leaps and bounds everyday. The competition in the industry is fierce, which makes fashion internships important for the college students who hopes to secure a career in this lucrative, face paced industry. The fashion internship program gives companies a way to bring on board, skilled fashion students in a very cost effective way. Many internships are either unpaid or the pay may be low. For the student who is seeking the internship, they get valuable hands on experience within the industry. Fashion internships give students the chance to vie for full time job opportunities within the company that they served their internship with.
Sometimes, fashion internships are for the summer, only. Other programs offer continuous opportunities which can either be paid, volunteer, or in exchange for college credit. When filling out applications, college students need to be aware of the deadline dates. Internships in fashion are not all necessarily in the area of actual design. Fashion companies often seek students to fulfil internships in the areas of production and marketing as well. Marketing in the fashion industry is crucial to it’s success, and there is a huge need for experienced fashion marketers in the industry. Marketing fashion is quite different from marketing other products such as cars or appliances.
Typically, fashion internships require that the student be flexible, and be able to work well with other members of the company’s fashion team. The ability to work under pressure is frequently a prerequisite because of the industry’s fast paced and sometimes frenetic work pace. In addition, keeping track of inventory such as samples, running errands and being computer literate are often requirements. The most important criteria, however, is a love for fashion. Of course, strong knowledge of the fashion industry is imperative, but a demonstrable love for the art needs to be exhibited as well.
Many prominent magazines offer fashion internships to help, especially during the spring and summer months. The candidate who works for a magazine may be asked to assist with photo shoots, and assist the editors with clerical or administration work. Frequently, in addition to a love and knowledge of fashion, the student that is interning at a fashion magazine will be required to have experience in computers, typing and other office related activities such as faxing. In addition, customer service skills may be required such as answering the telephone and greeting clients.
