Whether you plan to have a modest train set or an elaborate layout that includes towns, mountains, and rivers, it is easy to get started.  Everyone seems to be somewhat intrigued with the operation of trains and so there are lot of models available.  If you are planning to do more with your model railways than just have a small oval of track, an engine and a few cars, there are several things you will want to consider before you begin.  It will help you to get as much information about the hobby as you can.  There are many books and magazines that will help you along the way.

One of the first things you will want to think about is how much space you are going to devote to your hobby.  It is easily possible to use a great deal of floor space for your layout so you will want to decide on the kind of operation you want to have so that you can determine just how much space you will use.  The ideal situation would be to have an entire room for your layout.  A basement is a great location for your model railways.  You may want to use large sheets of paper to lay on the floor and actually draw your proposed layout on the paper.  Then you know exactly what the final product is going to look like and how it will fit in your space.

The next thing you will want to consider is what kind of operation you have going to model.  If you plan to move a lot of freight cars, you will need many sidings along factories and yards and the engines to move them.  There is a great amount of detail required for this kind of operation, but the finished layout is a lot of fun to use.  If your model railways are going to include more main line or passenger operations, then you are going to need plenty of long runs of track.  If you use a track design that includes grades and crossings, it is easy to have a long main line without using an incredible amount of space.

You will find that your model railways are a delight to anyone who sees them.  The pleasure of building the layout and designing the scenery is hard to beat.  You will spend many hours planning, building, changing things here and there, and then operating your trains.
