HDR Photography

HDR photography is a popular method of photography for amateurs and professionals alike. The term HDR refers to high dynamic range which means the difference between the lightest and darkest color values of a photo. Many also refer to this as the contrast of the shot. With an HDR photo, you will see a larger dynamic range than an ordinary photo which is why many try to obtain this type of shot although it is not easy. Today’s digital cameras for consumers are unable to capture this type of range due to their limitations. Yet photographers keep trying to find new ways to get this type of picture with the equipment they do have available.

You will often find pictures on the Internet that are described as HDR photography. Yet this is not possible as the limitations of the world wide web prevent these photos from displaying properly. You cannot see the appropriate contrast. HDR photos often take on a bizarre quality which makes them other worldly, similar to a 3D effect on a video game. Although people try to recreate this atmosphere, it is very difficult to do. Yet, that does not stop people from trying. Many techniques are being used, included taking multiple shots of the same scene and combining them to give optimal exposure throughout. Each shot will have a different exposure to capture high contrast in one particular area.

The goal of photography is to capture both scene and mood. Often you will find that some detail is missing from a shot. That is where HDR photography comes in. It tries to capture every detail of a scene to accurately recreate it for all time in the form of a photograph. Another reason this type of photography is so popular is due to the fact that HDR photos have all noise eliminated. You get a crisp, clean shot without any distractions.

Although HDR photography is currently not possible on consumer digital camera models, this does not mean you should stop trying for the perfect shot. Many techniques, such as taking multiple shots and combining them, are available for you to try. You may also wish to develop your own in the quest for the perfect shot. That is what makes photography so much fun. Each photo takes on a life of its own and mistakes you make often turn into absolutely amazing pictures that you cannot wait to share.
