New Tribes Mission and the Great Commission
When the Lord asked Isaiah, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” Isaiah answered, “Here I am. Send me.” This is the same phrase uttered by numerous people around the world known as missionaries. Those who are willing to go where no man has gone before. New Tribes Mission is sending them out with the Lord’s leading, to reach the 4 corners of the earth with the good news of Jesus Christ. These missionaries bring a personal relationship with their savior as the basis of a personal relationship with an unknown tribe. They are quick to say “send me” when the opportunity arises.
The relationship they offer is to the tribe itself and their customs. They live amongst their tribe learning their ways and teaching them ways to simplify their lives. The missionaries offer the tribes knowledge of daily living in the simple things like first aid and language. The missionaries learn their language patiently and fluently. New Tribes Mission members seek to fully grasp the hearts of the people they are sent to. It is in learning the tribal customs that a missionary gains freedom to share the reason why they have been sent. There is only one reason, but everything they do while there points to Him.
New Tribes Mission ultimate goal is to plant a church, but they do not do this hurriedly. They may spend years teaching the people and forging a strong relationship. With this firm foundation, they are then able to present the gospel with solid teaching starting at the beginning. The tribes of untaught people are hungry for spiritual food and as they are being disciples, they are learning to reach out to the people around them in their own village and then beyond. The desired end result is a mature church that reaches their communities and beyond their immediate neighbors.
New Tribes Mission does not leave a tribe of baby Christians when they move on. They leave a group of believers firmly planted in the Word, with hearts that desire to change the world around them, carrying on the Great commission.
